For hundreds of years, the Taino peoples called the island of Hispaniola their home. With the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1492, The Spanish claimed the island for their own. Later they conceded the western portion, now called Haiti, to the French. The area became a convenient launch pad for further excursions in to the new world for Spain. During the 19th and 20th centuries, the island nation went through several occupations and much political turmoil. Recently the local government has made great strides in moving towards a representative democracy.

Jamaican business etiquette is based upon polite formalities and respect for all parties concerned. In most cases, a suit jacket and tie should be worn to meetings. Punctuality is valued and appointments and business cards are expected.
In some situations, Jamaicans might communicate physically to emphasize statements by touching the shoulder or arm of the individual they are speaking with. Jamaicans tend to speak in a respectful and forthright manner and expect their conversation partners to do the same. Jamaican people can be very shy until they know you.

Located on the island of Hispaniola, which is part of the Greater Antilles archipelago in the Caribbean Sea, the Dominican Republic occupies the Eastern two-thirds of the island and includes the islands of Beata, Catalina, Saona, Alto Velo, and Catalinita in the Caribbean Sea, and several islets in the Atlantic Ocean. The other portion of the island belongs to the island nation of Haiti, Hispaniola one of two Caribbean islands that are shared by two countries. Dominicans often call their country “Quisqueya.”
